Features of a Hosting Plan
Features of a Hosting Plan
The main features of a hosting plan are:
Disk Space
All hosting accounts offer a certain amount of disk space that you can use to store your web files. This is recommended that you have some sort of estimates on what you need for various tasks. How much space will you need for your web files, databases, emails etc. By breaking down your usage you can better estimate how much space you should go for.
Email Accounts
Especially if you are hosting a domain, email accounts are a common feature of hosting. There are 3 main types of email accounts: forwarding, POP3 and aliases.
- Mail forwarding accounts are useful if you are employing the service of another company to filter your emails. Storing your emails on your mail server then emails are redirected to another email address.
- POP3 accounts are the traditional inbox. You have space on the server to store your emails and at the same moment you can use an email program to download your mail. Every login and password combination usually equals to one account.
- Aliases accounts are similar to mail forwarding account. Some hosts allow you to setup a catch-all aliases which is often used to collect emails that are sent to addresses not recognized by your mail server.
FTP Access
After you have created your web pages on your computer you need to transfer those files to your web server. These files are transferred to the server by use of FTP.
Central Web Hosting:
Web Servers: A pool of web servers is available to host web content. Multiple web servers, in several locations around campus, support Web Hosting. An outage at one location or on one server is highly unlikely to result in a system-wide outage.
Shell Access: UNIX shell host access permits interactive editing of content. Access to the shell servers is protected by UNIX permissions, and controlled by the local unit’s web developers. Only developers that are part of a unit’s website group are able to write to website directory space or other files.
Virtual Hosts: Custom Virtual Hosts (VHOSTs) will be defined so the web servers will answer traffic for the website name selected by the local unit.
Server Side Includes: Server Side Includes (SSI) are supported on central web servers. SSI provides another method of producing dynamic web content. SSI commands are put into an HTML comment, which is interpreted by the web server, resulting in dynamically-generated HTML.
CGI (Perl, sh, etc.): CGI is one method for executing binaries or interpreted scripts that generate web pages, which allows units to create dynamic websites. CGI scripts may be written in a variety of programming languages.
